About Us

The NewHartfordPlus Crew

The NewHartfordPlus crew members ~ at this point comprising of Maria and Bob Moore ~ are New Hartford residents who volunteer their time to report for NewHartfordPlus. They do this because they recognize the community-building potential of an independent, locally-run news medium. Crew members’ reports bring New Hartford news and New Hartford happenings to the New Hartford community.

This is what they do:

  • Bob Moore: Bob provides technical support for NewHartfordPlus. He set up the website and he continues to work on it to enhance its user-friendliness. Bob has a “shadow” site of NewHartfordPlus which he uses as his laboratory for trying out new features for the site. Bob is constantly on the lookout for new ways to improve the readers’ experience on NewHartfordPlus.  Bob works as a project manager/estimator at an international airport lighting company.
  • Maria Moore: Maria saw the need for an unaffiliated news medium that could focus its efforts on our New Hartford community. She is the editor, main reporter and main photographer for NewHartfordPlus.  Maria has worked in education, financial services, journalism (as a reporter, editor, and page layout/design technician), and always in the background, in social services. She currently works with autistic young men in a group home setting which prepares them to live and work independently in our communities.

NewHartfordPlus also has many friends who share their expertise with us as the need arises.  We thank them for their availability and sage counsel.

Providing Inspiration:

Our heartfelt thanks to the Recreation Commission members who tend to our community’s recreational needs and to our parks, and also to our volunteers.   Among the organizations and individuals they recognized at their Volunteer Recognition evening several months after we started reporting was our editor, Maria Moore, on behalf of NewHartfordPlus. Their plaque is displayed in our editor’s office, providing inspiration and affirmation as needed. Thank You!

Principles of Journalism:

We use as our guidelines for our journalistic efforts the Principles of Journalism as expressed by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.  They are as follows:

  1. Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth;
  2. It’s first loyalty is to citizens;
  3. Its essence is a discipline of verification;
  4. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover;
  5. It must serve as an independent monitor of power;
  6. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise;
  7. It must strive to make the significant interesting and relevant;
  8. It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional;
  9. Its practioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.

For an explanation of each principle please visit the Principles of Journalism page on the Journalism.org website, the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.
