H1N1 (Swine Flu) Clinic Update: The H1N1 vaccine clinic scheduled for today, Saturday, December 19, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, 25 Darling Drive in Avon is CLOSED.   • Hartford County Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count: The 110th Annual National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. Compiler for today’s Hartford County count is Jay Kaplan of Roaring Brook Nature Center, 71 Gracey Road, Canton. For more information on the bird counts taking place today around Connecticut, please see the Christmas Bird Count schedule on the Connecticut Ornithological Society’s website.
  • Eureka Grange Cookie Walk: from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Eureka Grange #62 Hall on Litchfield Turnpike, Route 202, in the Nepaug section of New Hartford.
  • North Pole Village Display: Stop by Penny and Randy Miller’s home to enjoy the spectacular North Pole Village and other seasonal Department 56 displays. From 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at 30 Stag Mountain Road, New Hartford. Please remember to bring one non-perishable food item with you to view the display (which will go to benefit those in need in our community). For more information please call Penny: 860-482-7935.
  • The Leather Man: Mysterious Wanderer: at 2:00 p.m., in the Ceder Room at White Memorial Conservation Center, 80 Whitehall Road, Litchfield. Local historian and story teller, Shirley Sutton, shares in depth knowledge about the fascinating character who, dressed in his leather suit, hiked Westchester County, New York, and parts of Connecticut in the 1800’s. Speaking very little, the Leather Man communicated his needs with hand gestures. Town residents grew to expect his appearances, accommodating his simple requests and often giving him leather scraps, tobacco, and sometimes money. For more information, please call: 860-567-0857.
