Close Encounter With A Bear: A Most Extraordinary Tag Sale

Photos & Text: Maria Moore

Having just finished breakfast at the New Hartford Diner, the NewHartfordPlus crew made a right out of Marandino’s Plaza. With Bob at the wheel of his faithful Mini, it was going to be a great drive – or so he thought.

“Wait – turn around – a bear!” Maria called and he quickly made a U-turn in the Portobello Restaurant and turned back. “Pull into K-9!” Maria said and that’s what he did, only to find himself at one end of a tag sale in Kelly’s K-9 parking lot. And sure enough, just as Maria had said, there sat a taxidermy bear, quietly watching the traffic go by from its seat on a trailer.

The bear was in the company of other taxidermy animals: two pheasants and two mounted deer heads. The fox, Kelly told the NHPlus crew, had just left to take up its new post as a guardian of a chicken coop. All the animals were from Action Wildlife in Goshen and none – except for one of the deer – had come from a live kill.

“I’d love the bear for my front porch,” Maria said and then, taking one look at the $410 price tag, she contented herself with snapping photos of it, before some other tag saler bagged it and took it home to begin the next phase of its life.

Kelly’s extraordinary tag sale is at her K-9 Depot on Main Street in Pine Meadow, opposite the Marandino’s Plaza. The bear is one of a kind and there is no guarantee that it will still be there if you decide to take a drive to see it. But it might just be…
