There’s something about picking up a tin of wild pole-caught tuna from California and discovering in the small print that it was, in fact, “Packaged in Vietnam” that made us ask: “Has the world gone mad with all this outsourcing? Surely transporting tuna from California to Vietnam and back to a grocery store in Connecticut can’t be ecologically sound?”
And so the tin went back on the shelf and Bob and I waited a couple of days to head down to our local Farmers’ Market. That’s where we know we’ll find Kenny Dahill with chickens, ducks and quail – all from his MarWin Farm on Steele Road. And this week, we’ve been told, Kenny will also be bringing duck sausage and – wait for it – quail-a-penos which are quail stuffed with a jalapeno pepper, stuffed with goat cheese, all wrapped in bacon and ready for the grill : WOW!
Need more good reasons to shop at our local New Hartford Farmers’ Market? Here’s Anita Barden’s list of what you’ll find at the market today:
Corn!! baked goods, eggs, cheese, jams, veggies, milk. Food, friends, music.
And having just feasted on an omelette made with farm-fresh eggs and and a salad made with veggies from the Barden’s farm I can honestly say: ”Nothing tastes as good as locally grown food!”
The New Hartford Farmers’ Market is on the Green at Chapin Park every Friday from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.ish. Please stop by on your way back from work or from the beach and shop with our local farmers who’ll be bringing to the market the freshest, tastiest food around. Now that’s local and sustainable!
