On a perfect Memorial Day Sunday, over 242 runners gathered for what has become a local tradition: the Race Around The Lake, a 3.5-mile course which starts in Brodie Park at Berkshire Hall, on West Hill Road, winds its way around West Hill Lake and ends in Brodie Park at the Field House, on Niles Road. This was the 11th year of the race, brought to us by a committed group of Friends of Brodie Park.*
The race, which is timed by Greystone Racing, attracts runners from across the state and beyond, but it also welcomes walkers, alone or accompanied by their dogs, and young families, some running with their little ones and others pushing baby carriages with those too young to walk.
The race began promptly at 10 a.m. and 21 minutes and 20 seconds later the runners started to cross the finish line, led by Josh Adams of New Hartford. In second place was Darryl Falk of New Hartford (22:05), and in third place was Richard Grustas of Burlington (23:09). The first woman to cross the finish line was Meghan Forgione of Southbury (26:12).
What makes this race such a favorite among participants and spectators alike is the all-embracing nature of the race: winner Josh Adams’ wife, Theresa and their young daughter were also in the race, as were many other family groups. Other family groups from New Hartford were the Manginis, the Sundquists, the Jerrams, the Brobstons, the Rouleaus, the Rosengrens, the Helts, and more. In all, 151 of the 242 participants were from New Hartford – a truly local event!
