Board Of Finance Sets New Mill Rate For 2012-2013 Fiscal Year
The town’s Board of Finance has set a new mill rate of 24.80 for the upcoming 2012-2013 fiscal year which begins on July 1, 2012.
At a Special Meeting held on Tuesday, May 15, Board of Finance Chairman Ben Witte informed the other Board members present that the mill rate required to fund the town’s approved budget of $22,302,906.63, assuming a 98% collection rate, is 24.86. Traditionally, the Board of Finance has either rounded up or rounded down the mill rate to one decimal place. In this instance, Ben said, rounding up to 24.9 would allow the town to collect an additional $28,630 in taxes; rounding down to 24.8 would lose $42,945 in taxes that would not be collected.
After a brief discussion, Reggie Smith made a motion to set the mill rate at 24.8 for the upcoming fiscal year. Kate Rieger seconded Reggie’s motion and the motion was passed unanimously by the Board of Finance members present at the meeting. For fiscal year 2011-2012 the mill rate was 24.2.
The new mill rate of 24.8 will result in a tax bill of $2,480 per $100,000 valuation for the fiscal year 2012-2013. This is an increase in a homeowner’s real estate taxes of $57.83 per $100,000 valuation.
Board of Finance members present at the May 15 meeting were Ben Witte, Kate Rieger, Reggie Smith and Alternate Bill Coates (seated in Jim Fitzgerald’s place). Absent were Jim Fitzgerald, Dan Charest and Maria Moore. Since the two alternates on the Board of Finance are both Republicans, neither Dan Charest (Democrat) nor Maria Moore (Unaffiliated) could assign an Alternate to be seated in their place.
