Following is a press release from the Beekley Library regarding the Art Exhibit and Wine Tasting Fundraiser at the library this evening:
The Beekley Library will host an Art Exhibit of early 20th century watercolors and photographs by artists from Monhegan, a tiny island located 10 miles offshore from Boothbay Harbor. Artists represented will include Sears Gallagher (featured in a 2007 exhibition at the Boston Public Library), Samuel Triscott (honored with a show at the Portland Museum of Art in 2003) and well-known Rockport, Massachusetts artist Eric Hudson. Two of Monhegan’s first women painters, Maud Briggs Knowlton and Alice Swett, will also be represented.
These works were collected by Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice Charles F. Jenney (1865-1923) whose cottage was one of the first vacation homes on the island. Some of these works were exhibited in the Monhegan Museum show “A Painter’s Paradise: Monhegan Island” in 2009 but others have never before been shown publicly.
A wine tasting will accompany the art for this kick-off gala event with several vendors from New Hartford Wine and Beverage. There will be a wide variety of wines available for tasting and purchasing. There will also be an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts from local restaurants. Guitarist Tracy Walton will provide a musical backdrop throughout the evening. The exhibit will remain at the Library from March 24th through April 14th.
Tickets will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door. All proceeds will support the Library. Call the Library for tickets to this exciting event: 860-379-7235.
