Letter To Town’s Selectmen: Brodie South Neighborhood Disturbed By Increased Traffic, Noise, Shouts, Whistles, Horns, Lights, Generators & Garbage

Following is a copy of a letter from Janet Corey, a resident near Brodie Park South, which she sent to the Board of Selectmen and to Dan Eddy, Chairman of the Brodie South Study Group.  The letter enumerates the drastic change to the quiet of the neighborhood due to the use of the field area at Brodie South by New Hartford Football.

Pine trees with lowest branches cutJanet’s concern at the use of Brodie South for active sports activity deepened today when she learned from members of the town’s Highway Department – who were at Brodie South cutting the lower branches of the pine trees around the open field area – that they have been instructed by First Selectman Dan Jerram to cut down the stand of pine trees  behind the goal posts which separate the two open fields now being used for football practice.  The crew members have also been instructed to mow the meadow area adjacent to the fields throughout the summer rather than just once every September, as has been the case up until now.

[Note: We have replaced the original copy of Janet's letter with the one above which has had some misspellings corrected. This has been done at Janet's request; 6 p.m., Wedn. Aug. 10]

Word has gotten out to the football crowd that garbage and debris left around the fields won’t be tolerated.  This is a sensitive issue for the town’s people and especially neighbors and regular users of the park area.  Cooperation among all users is needed.  I can also assure “Wilbs999″ that there are more than 2 people who use Brodie south for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, mountain biking, and hiking.  Add my name and all those people in my family as well as friends of ours.  We’re not the first people to break trail after the snow falls either…

So it appears you don’t have a full-time job, or that you have decided you like other comments, not mine.
Janet should have bought the property, if she wanted to restrict it’s use.  Period.

You mean Janet can’t spell?  Excuse me.  If Janet wanted to lock up the property she should have bought it.  Deal is, we were told on its purchase that it might become a golf course.  I might have liked that, but it’s not, and I don’t want to spend my tax dollars taking property off the rolls that hikers don’t use (with grass waist high) and 2 people with snowshoes might use.  You guys want to lock off the property from use, BUY IT!

I couldn’t agree with Janet Corey more.  The original intent of the land was for passive use.  Football practice and equipment storage and regular meadow cutting is not passive use.  I believe you were unfair depicting Ms. Corey as being anti-children/anti-family.  I live on Niles Rd. not far from Brodie South.  I take my family, including 3 children, there for walks and lunches and playing occasionally.  The scouts go there for nature hikes and learning.  We are very lucky and appreciative to have the open space to teach our children about preserving land for future generations, teaching them about the habitat living there, sledding in the winter, sharing time as a family, etc.  Football is not the only way to spend time as a family.  If New Hartford Football needs space for practice, let’s maintain an open process for that topic and obtain playing field(s) via an open process and town meetings.  If we are not responsible caretakers of maintaining open space such as Brodie South, future generations of children will be left with learning about wildlife, trees, vernal pools, change of seasons through books and television.

You just don’t get it.   It is not about you, it is about the kids.  It is about fighting the #1 problem in America- child obesity, it is about smiling faces, laughing children, learning teamwork, interacting.  It is about so much more than your complaints.

I just saw Chitty Chitty bang, bang at the Warner Theatre and your comments and commentary makes me believe that you are the Child Catcher and want the town of New Hartford to be free of any sight of children.  How sad.

As for the POD for our equipment- to get that picture, you had to walk to the inner most part of the field and tilt sideways to even see it.
